Ep# 178: [Pep Talk] Have the Courage to Show Up
I see a major problem happening. We get to see what entrepreneurs are doing daily because of social media. But what you have to remember is, everyone gets to choose what they put forth. It could be true, it could be untrue, it could be cultivated behind the scenes to look a certain way when the reality is not like that. So this pep talk is just a reminder to not fall for this -- this being the assumption that other people are rocking their biz and you are trying to run with cinder block shoes.
In my line of work, I have the unique privilege of being able to get under the hood of many entrepreneurs’ businesses. And for many of these business owners, if I were just to see them from the outside - their podcast, blog, social media, etc - I would assume that they were killing it, or at the very least that they have a decent business. But when I actually get behind the scenes, 80% of what is being presented to the world is a facade, an “if I built it they will come” thought process.
So much of the actual valuable experiences and growth these entrepreneurs are experiencing is happening entirely behind the scenes because they’re too afraid to show this struggle.
I don’t necessarily love the whole “share everything and bare all wounds” approach to social media either, that’s not what I’m advocating for. There is such a thing as oversharing.
But what I am saying is that people spend so much time making themselves appear a certain way that is not actually true. And then it gives us the misconception of where they’re really at, and then we compare ourselves to something that isn’t even reality.
