Ep# 145: Life Beyond the Highlight Reel with Meredith Boggs
I’m so excited to bring you this conversation with Meredith Boggs, because in short - the world needs it! We have a very deep and honest conversation about showing up and living life beyond the highlight reel.
So much of what we see and hear in the online space is the best of the best, people highlight reels. But there is so much that doesn’t make the cut. Our social media presence is not the full representation of the sum of all our parts, okay?!
I know so many of you are facing this battle right now, comparing yourself to others and feeling burnt out by trying to keep up with the demands of social media. If this is you, you are going to love this conversation. Meredith shares so much wisdom around how to overcome this.
If you need to be freed of the pressure of social media and want to feel more secure and confident in how you’re showing up for your business and life, this is the conversation for you!
In this episode, we chat about:
Living life beyond the highlight reel
Social media is just a fragment of our life. It isn’t representative of our life as a whole: our beliefs and values and all of the messy life that happens in between. Bringing more authenticity and vulnerability to your social media presence is a game changer. The more you can share the other half of your life that isn’t the highlight reel, the easier it will be for us to normalize these experiences that can otherwise feel isolating.
We often start to feel imposter syndrome when we only get to see other people’s highlight reels. AND if we are only showing others our version of “perfection”, we can start to feel out of alignment and question our own reality. It can start to feel dangerous, honestly.
How to use social media to enhance our lives, not distract and take away from them
I think almost everyone struggles with this. At the end of the day, we were created for human connection, and that’s one of the gifts that social media can give us. But how do we use it and steward it to protect our mental and emotional health? How do we still live in alignment with who we are and what we believe in?
Some ideas for you to implement:
Stop. Physically put your phone down and change your scenery.
Redirect your thoughts. What lies are you saying and believing about yourself that social media is reinforcing?
Consider what you have lost by spending so much time on social media: gratitude, presence, time freedom, etc.
Physically separate yourself from your phone. When do you absolutely not want to be on your phone? Leave your phone in another room during these times.
Cell phone free Sundays (or any day of the week that works best for you). Pick one day per week where you aren’t working and eliminate your phone completely.
Debunking the Laptop Lifestyle
Entrepreneurship gets glamorized, when in reality: we’re often working from our closets in our yoga pants.
Having a startup is not for the faint of heart. It’s like having a child: there are moments of complete panic and meltdown where you question every decision you’ve ever made.
Many people who take the leap into entrepreneurship feel a sense of let down when it’s actually hard and not all that glamorous. You’re always going to have “Mondays,” you’re always going to have emails in your inbox, you might even have a few 12 hour days. We need to normalize the unglamorous side of entrepreneurship. Many people feel like they’re failing when in reality, they’re right where they need to be.
