Tianna’s Journey to Entrepreneurship
Tianna’s traditional approach took her from working at a holistic therapy office during undergrad to specializing in virtual work in graduate school to her heart and spirit reaching for entrepreneurship. Now, she brings in some I/O psychology to help others build businesses from the ground up with extreme dedication and intention.
Intentionality in the hiring process
Be ready before you even hire. It is so important to understand the foundations of team building: your mission, vision, and core values.
These 3 pillars should then be applied to your organizational structure. The org structure is as simple as knowing who you need to bring on in order for your vision to come to fruition.
Sometimes the smartest thing entrepreneurs can do is take 10 steps back and reevaluate the vision -- really understanding and uncovering what it’s going to take to fulfill your vision is the best starting place.
Entrepreneurs’ biggest mistakes in hiring
Hiring out of a place of desperation without putting forethought into the process. Don’t wait until the ship is sinking to hire! You’ll end up adding someone to your team who doesn’t fit the bill or doesn’t compliment how you want to serve your community.
Hiring too early and not putting forethought into your mission, vision, and core values. Your people have to be grounded in what really matters! Hiring prematurely without knowing what your business stands for does not build a team for longevity.
Never revisiting the mission, vision, and core values. Once your company/business/team evolves, re-evaluate your vision and realign as needed.
Steeping the hiring process in your mission, vision, and core values
From the get-go, you can infuse your mission, vision, and core values into the job description. From the first step, someone is getting a good picture of the company culture and the type of leader you are.
Have an ideal hire avatar. It’s just as important to repel those who do not fit both in personality and skill set as it is to attract the gems who are ideal hires.
The interview must also include specific, situational questions tied back to your mission, vision, and core values.
The onboarding process is an opportunity to show your hires the large role they play in the mission and vision of your business. It is your responsibility to train and grow them as team members and entrepreneurs themselves.
The Onboarding Process: Transactional to Intentional
Tips during early onboarding to infuse the culture and excitement in the process:
Restate the mission, vision, and core values so that the hire knows she is valued and there’s room for growth...she’s not just there to collect a paycheck.
Talk specifically about how her role fits into the bigger picture.
Get ideas and feedback from the hire on how she can connect deeper.
Put foresight into what long-term, step-by-step training could look like.
Managing vs. Leading: The Big Difference
Managing looks like:
Transactional
Limited interaction between leader and hire
Assigning tasks and delegating
Structural necessity
Truth bombs about management:
Management does not automatically elevate you to leadership!
Just because you’re managing does not mean your team looks to you as a leader.
Leading looks like:
Intentional
Earned
Next level dedication to team building and ongoing team development
Leads oneself first, understands oneself at a core level, and knows her strengths and weaknesses
Takes time to know and understand nuances of team members and helps them grow
Truth bombs about leadership:
Leadership is not a birthright; leadership is actively pursued.
Leadership is a complete journey, and if you want to embody it, you're going to have to put the work in!
