Episode# 008: Delegate or Drown: How to Build a Team That Believes in Your Mission Part II

If you caught part 1 of this mini series you heard all about how to build your team and how to delegate from the ground up! Whether you’re entrenched in a successful business already or have aspirations of starting one, delegation is such a key piece of the puzzle to free you up to focus on what will move the needle towards your dream.

But in this episode, we’re talking about what to do once you have that person or those people on board! It doesn’t matter if you’re bringing someone on to prep your food or do some laundry or a virtual assistant within your brand, casting the vision for your team no matter how small it is and creating a culture within it has to start with you!

I’m giving you an inside glimpse into our world and our team and telling you the mistakes I’ve made and the groove that we’ve since found and why it’s helping my business grow!

Now that you have your team, how do you create the vision & culture that will help you grow your business exponentially?!

  1. Lay the groundwork

  • Have the long term vision in mind AND communicate it to your team OFTEN

  • Identify what you need- make it clear what your expectations are for your hires

  • Have your template and tools for hiring in place

  • Delegate before desperation- Most of the time, people don’t hire until they are in over their heads. DON’T wait until you are desperate to start hiring!

2. Getting your team on board with your vision and mission

  • Have a mission statement AND communicate it often

  • Create a team manifesto- allow your team to take part, so they are EXCITED about what they’re working toward & for.

  • Get them excited about their role!!

3. Training your team for success

  • Over communicate expectations with clarity and regularity

  • Ease into it by walking them through one thing at a time

  • If you’re delegating something specific to your business that you already do, take a screen capture or a detailed HOW-TO video

  • If it’s something for in your home, show them how you want it done

  • I do it, you watch. You do it, I watch. You do it.

  • Validate and praise when they get it right!!

  • Don’t micromanage, LEAD

  • Weekly Zoom Meetings- THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. Keep the communication open & help keep them accountable & excited about the mission!

  • Come up with systems for projects, communication (Team Facebook Page, Trello, Slack)

4. Creating the culture YOU WANT

  • Everyone on my team reads Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin

  • Create a questionnaire to get to know them better- THIS IS SUCH A GREAT TOOL!!

  • Include them in the conversation and creation process

  • Surprise them with generosity! YES- This goes a loooong way! Send them flowers, a thoughtful card, a sweet text message, post a video of gratitude on your team FB page
