Ep# 066: You're Not Too Busy, You Just Need To Do THIS, with Curt Mercadante
You are going to obsess over today’s conversation with Curt Mercadante. I’m obsessing over it because it is so in alignment with what we preach here at Scaling Up. We’re talking about building a business that supports the vision you have for your life.
How can you make sure you are continually scaling a business that speaks to you? How can you make sure you are scaling your finances in a way that allows you to do more of what you love and be with who you love? This is what we’re talking about.
Curt is a speaker, a trainer, an author and a father of four. He’s a busy guy! And he only works 12-15 hours per week. That’s evidence of the fact that he has a vision for his life and he’s standing by his value system and (this is the key!) he has built a business that supports his values and vision.
You are going to be so inspired after you listen to Curt. He gives some really specific tangibles and takeaways that you can apply to your life and business right now to make that pivot and ensure that you’re growing and scaling the way that you should be.
In this episode, we chat about:
Why it’s so common to experience burnout as an entrepreneur
“The first and most important step you can take is to do the hard work of defining your vision.”
Reverse engineering your vision into reality
“It’s easy to get out of alignment. It’s easy to be off course just a little bit, and then it catches up to you with time.
Aligning the three facets of your life: relationships, self, work
“My days are chock full. I’m not busy, but they’re full. I’ll work for three hours because I have three defined outcomes, and then I’ll get up, I’ll shut my computer, and I’ll go read to my kids, or we’ll go to the beach, or my wife and I will go on a date, or I take a boxing class in the middle of the day. … A lot of people haven’t defined the things outside of work that they would actually do. You can create anything you want.”
How to build a business that supports your vision for your life
“It’s not going to happen overnight. I’m guessing that when you started your business you weren’t working 12 hours per week. But you had that vantage point of: ‘Okay that’s where I want to go. I’m going to continually support that vision now, even though I can’t live it yet. I’m going to be doing things, making things, creating passive income streams, making sure that all of the work I’m doing today is ultimately getting me where I want to go.’”
Start working toward achieving your goals with Curt’s Five Pillars:
Superpowers: Combine your natural talents and your learned skills
Vision: “Vision pairs your purpose for living with the impact you want to make on the world.”
Alignment: Align the three facets of your life in a way that works for you
Outcomes: Become radically outcome-focused without becoming obsessed with the results
Flow: Get out of constant Fight or Flight mode. You’re happier, you’re more fulfilled, you’re looser, you’re more creative.
The major ‘Don’ts’ when working toward your vision:
Don’t put tactics ahead of strategy
Don’t reject having a vision
