Ep# 183: This is Why You Need to Consider LinkedIn for your 2021 Social Media Strategy with Andrea Jones
The long awaited topic: leveraging LinkedIn to connect with the right people, grow your list, and increase your conversions.
This is a topic you guys have asked for again and again, but to be very honest with you, LinkedIn is a platform that I have very little experience in as an entrepreneur. I used to use LinkedIn back in the day when I was in the corporate world, and it was basically just a resume for me. So we called in an expert for this one!
Andrea Jones joins us on the show today and she is masterful at utilizing LinkedIn for online businesses. We get into the nitty gritty of how to use LinkedIn to grow and scale your business. And don’t worry, she starts at ground zero!
In this episode, we chat about:
Getting started on LinkedIn
Everyone and their mother is on Instagram, but LinkedIn is much less saturated. It’s a lot easier to stand out on LinkedIn.
Start by updating your Headline. LinkedIn also shows off your job title and gives you up to 200 characters to explain in more detail what you do. As entrepreneurs, we often work with a very niche group of people, and LinkedIn allows you to communicate that clearly from the get go.
Then jump to your Summary/About Section. This is a longer section about what you do, similar to the About page on your website. If someone scrolls here, they’re looking for a reason to trust you. So give it to them!
What about past job history?
Should you delete that job you had at Sephora when you were 16? Andrea says keep it there! We love a person with a history and a story, and you never know what’s going to resonate with someone. Just make sure to obviously include the business you run now.
Does the aesthetic matter?
There isn’t a history of your content on LinkedIn in the same ways as Instagram. On Instagram, you can see everything someone has ever posted, but on LinkedIn, only the last couple of posts you shared will actually show up. So you don’t have to worry about the aesthetic.
You can add in some branding elements in your cover photo as a way to stand out and represent what you do.
Creating Connections on LinkedIn
Because LinkedIn is a more professional platform, you do want to approach your strategy from a relationship building perspective. Look at your connections as a place to start. Spend 5-10 minutes each day looking for new people to connect with.
What’s the best content to share?
Linkedin content has a long shelf life.
Think about the goal of your content: Are you promoting your offer? Are you aiming for engagement? Do you want others to re-share? Try to rotate between these types of posts and consistently post 1-2 times per week.
You can also share business celebrations. People love to celebrate with others.
Features of LinkedIn
The body of your content is still the most important.
Video is great, but make sure you have subtitles, just like Instagram, because many people watch silently.
Graphics aren’t a requirement, but you can add them in if you like!
